New Company Takes Theater 'Under Ground'
By: Ruth Haney
A group of veteran artists from the spectrum of Seattle’s theater community have joined forces and created a new company
Theater Under Ground. Producing shows in CHAC Lower Level, Theater Under Ground has hit the ground running with the acclaimed Crime and Punishment, produced in association with CHAC. Theater Under Ground’s production has been called “nuanced and entertaining” (The Stranger), “hard-hitting” and “ferocious” (Seattle Times), and “potent” (Seattle P-I). The show has no set end date, and tickets are currently on sale through August. Theater Under Ground will announce additional blocks of tickets as they are released.
Hot on the heels of CHAC’s last long-running show, Stones in His Pockets, Theater Under Ground is producing theater on the same principle that propelled its predecessor: that good theater rooted in true human experience can and will generate a buzz that will sustain an extended run in Seattle.
Theater Under Ground is a non-profi
t theater, honored to be endorsed and f
iscally sponsored by Allied Arts. The company joins artists from Capitol Hill Arts Center, Seattle Repertory Theater, Seattle Children’s Theatre, and Strawberry Theatre Workshop. The company is rooted in good story telling and the belief that, at its core, a good story pierces the heart of what it means to be truly human. Theater Under Ground digs deep into commonplace experience and reveals the hidden extraordinary.
“Every day we stand at a threshold that is begging to be questioned and explored, a place buried deep within the mind that requires a live experience such as theatre to be brought to awareness. This is the kind of experience that results in a positive change, one that spills out into the community and brings people together,” shared Co-Artistic Director Sheila Daniels.
Theater Under Ground is comprised of three core members: Co-Artistic Directors Sheila Daniels and Matthew Kwatinetz and Artistic Liason Josh Beerman.
The current production includes performances by Galen Joseph Osier, Mark Fullerton and Hannah Lass supported by a crew of Jason Harber, Ruth Haney, Peter Rush, Maggie DiGiovanni, and Jodie Briscoe.
